Microstructural engineering of copper alloys through nanocomposite design and controlled solidification

The NanoSTeW group develops next-generation copper-based functional materials by combining two advanced physical techniques: pulsed laser ablation in liquid for the synthesis of nanocomposite powders, and Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-EB/M) for their additive manufacturing into high-performance components.

Our aim is to establish a scalable, sustainable production route for copper parts with tailored microstructures and superior thermal and electrical properties — properties critical for applications in power electronics, aerospace, and industrial heat management.

Founded in 2025 as a NanoMatFutur Junior Research Group, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), we are based at the Chair of Materials Science and Additive Manufacturing, Bergische Universität Wuppertal.
